Red Cabbage/Is it Christmas already?

Every week, all the supermarkets send out their offers. It's always on Tuesdays and the offers will last for a week, though the items on sale often sell out before that. This week, one supermarket had an offer on cabbage. It didn't take us long time to get there. I had my mind on a big head of savoy, but ended up with a beautiful purple head of red cabbage.

Red cabbage is a very common dish for Christmas in Sweden. You eat it warm and most often along with the Christmas ham. You can buy it pre made in a jar and just reheat it, but a lot of people also cook it themselves. It's super easy and most recipes are just the same one tweaked a little. What you want to do is to make it soft, sweet and a little sour.

I don't have a real recipe to give you, but follow these instructions and you'll be OK:
-  Cut the cabbage in thin strips, and use a big skillet to cook it with some margarine or veggie oil until somewhat tender.
- Add some salt, black pepper, cinnamon and ground cloves. I don't have amounts for you, but go easy on the cinnamon and cloves, you just want a touch of it. Add some golden syrup (I guess sugar would be fine too), I used about 3 tablespoons. You can also add some strong blackcurrant juice if you have. I added some soy sauce, because I like it, but that's not so traditional.
- Let it cook on low heat until the cabbage is tender. Taste it and adjust the spices if needed.

Eat with some kind of potatoes, some tofu or seitan and maybe some apple sauce.

  1. I don't think I've ever had a sweet and sour cabbage before. I tend to be a bit dull in my coleslaw making. Perhaps it is time to spice it up. Thanks!

  2. I bought a head of savoy cabbage. And then I realized my fridge is full. I need to use it up soon. Thank you for the great idea!

  3. Panda: It's not a very stron flavour, it's kind of subtle, especially the sourness which only comes with the blackcurrant. But it's lovely with the cloves.
